Dear Fred,

I wept when I read your story my friend. It was like reading my own 2 years ago. I live in Canada. In this country Phizer markets the same drug as CHAMPIX. I took Champix in May of 2008. After only a few days I became catatonic. I was suicidical also. I started to cry all the time and had no idea why. I was scared to drive for fear I'd drive myself right off the road. I figured it would be such an easy way out from how I felt. I would lay in bed and think about my funeral, who would attend? Who would care for my children? I felt SO BAD I HAD NO DESIRE TO FEEL BETTER. I was terrified to be left alone. I was a normal, healthy mother of two prior to taking this drug!! In a matter of days my whole world changed. Coincidince?? I think not. I took the drug for 2-3 weeks. I contacted both Phizer and Health Canada to report the adverse reaction I had. They simply had me fill out a health questionaire. I was now a statistic. Fantastic. I begged them to pull this drug from the market. I said they were playing RUSSION ROULETTE with human lives. Phizer responded by saying that I could react just as badly from withdrawal from nicotine. I said bullsh**. I had quit smoking three times prior. I had NEVER felt anything like it. My health deteriorated over the next several months. My GP put me on anti-depressants. I gained 40 pounds. Wow, that me less depressed. 15 mths after I took Champix my health had gotten so bad I was hospitalized. I was now in the looney bin. Yup locked up. It was then I was diagnosed with Bipoplar II. WOW MENTAL ILLNESS!!!! Are you kidding me??? My psychiatrist explained it like this. There may have been family history of bipolar illness. Champix in his opinion triggered or "switched" the illness in me. I could have lived my whole life never knowing the inside of a mental ward. Phizer has known along that the main ingredient in the drug has history of causing psychotic behaviour, psychiatric conditions. The drug trials they conducted were on normal healthy people with no family history of mental health issues--for that very reason. Did you know that the FAA has banned all it's pilots and air traffic controllers from taking Champix/ Chamtix? Sure it's fine for you and I---Poor fools. One of the side effects of this drug is UNEXPECTED BLACKOUTS> GOOD LUCK DRIVING MY FRIENDS. THIS DRUG IS DEADLY, DANGEROUS, AND SHOULD NOT BE SOLD. I, along, with 2 other woman have started a class action law suit in B.C. Phizer is not going to get away with this. Fred, stand and be counted. what they have done to you IS NOT O.K. Please report this to your G.P. Report this to the freaks at Phizer and Please report to the U.S. gov't. Whatever the agency is that handles is there. We MUST speak out. It is very under reported. My best advise is to seek a good psychiatrist. They are trained to manage and sort out your brain chemistry. I'm getting there. I've been on countless drugs trying to fix what's been broken. I've missed several months of work. My husband has missed his wife. My children have missed their mother. I have lost myself. I wish I were a smoker. Thank you Phizer. Boy do I feel healthy now.

I would love for my brother to stop smoking would never recommend this product to him now that I know how severe and dangerous the side effects can be. The best way to quit is never to start in the first place. Here is another article from a wellness site about the Chantix side effects and a more natural approach to quitting…

Katie, I never tried that technique to quit smoking, so I cannot vouch for it personally. I *can* tell you that Chantix/Champix worked. I quit smoking using it. I have not touched a cigarette or any other nicotine source in well over 2 years. HOWEVER, I feel sure the reason I have never relapsed is largely because of what I went through. It took so long to recover, and all that time (especially in the early days) all I could think was, "If I'd just been strong enough to quit on my own...." There are still days I crave a cigarette and would like to have one.... but I hope I never go back to that bad habit. I have gone through too much to come out of this. Please stay in touch. Thanks for your comments.

I am a hypnotherapist, and people come to me as a 'last resort' to help them stop smoking. Within the last year, I would guess around 25-35% of stop smoking clients have specifically mentioned Champix and its worrying side effects. They've either tried it and felt awful or have serious concerns about it.

Apart from the very unpleasant side effect, success rates for staying quit 12 months later for Champix/Chantix are surprisingly low - 22% is the max that I've seen in any published research. Pretty pathetic compared with hypnosis that starts at 30% for simple audio recordings and can go up to 94% depending on the skill of the therapist. A big study was conducted and reported in the New Scientist in Oct 1992 that looked at over 72K smokers. It concluded that hypnosis was street ahead of anything else on the market, include pharmaceutical treatments. Check out the stats on my site http://katieglen.com/stop-smoking/94-per-cent-success-rate-with-over-1000-smokers/

If this information was freely available, smokers would be able to make the choice between a natural, safe method that actually works and a drug treatment with potentially fatal side effects that doesn't deliver for most people. I know which one I'd go for.

I can relate to Debbie's story. I took Chantix for 3 weeks. After the first week, I began to have severe joint pain all over ...shoulder, hips, hands. I quit taking Chantix at 3 weeks and things got worse, not better. I started having muscle pain in addition to the joint pain. I went to see the doctor. She finally diagnosed me with Fibromyalgia. I still have not found any relief. I barely sleep at night I'm so uncomfortable. I'm taking Lyrica, an anti-epileptic that was supposed to help, but it hasn't. I've been smoke free since my first week on Chantix, but at what cost? I would not recommend this drug to anyone. You never know what you're going to get!
